Home values aren’t going to rise dramatically in the next few years, as they did in the decade just ended. That doesn’t mean you can’t take matters into your own hands, however. There are a number of improvements you can make to your home that are likely to increase its resale value, as well as make your environment more pleasurable. Here are three:
1. Upgrade your kitchen or bathroom. It’s true that kitchens and bathrooms are what often sell a home. But be conservative in your choices. 2. Build a home office. These days, just about everyone works from home, or spends a fair amount of time on a computer. Make sure there are plenty of electrical outlets, a phone jack (some people still use landline phones), and proper ceiling lighting.
3. Add a deck. Most people enjoy entertaining, especially in warm weather. Adding a deck or patio to your home extends your living area outside. It makes your home feel bigger, even though you haven’t added an extra room. Consider installing a heat lamp or two for those chilly evenings.
If you’re tight on funds, take small steps, such as adding a built-in bookcase. Spread out the work over time. The point is, if you make the right investments in your home, you’ll increase its value in the long run—and enhance your living environment in the short term.
